winter tire recommendations for RWD car

Looking for ideas on what to load on a 2009 Nissan 350Z. Any real experience?

I don't give a crap about FWD or 4WD suggestions. I know about those and have experience.

    Thanks

    You buy a new ride?

Tough on a RWD sports car, I'd say just get the most aggressive pattern you can and throw some extra weight in the trunk.

Well, there are VERY few days that you cannot drive a RWD low ride height car here. Just looking for a second set of wheels and tires to swap into this winter. I think the studded Hankooks may be our weapons of choice. I don't want to spend $2k on a set of wheels and tires.

Same here. Last RWD cars I drove all winter where old land yachts back in the 80's.
Like we did back in NY and PA, and just like Brian said, studded snows with bags of sand in the trunk.

Nowadays can't help but think that the modern stuff that works on FWD/AWD should work on a Z, just still want to add the weight too.

Yeah, weight is a must. With current traction control tech the Z is supposed to be pretty good on the snow/ice. Just need a set of shoes

We will be getting the car in Feb.

Studded tires are teh sux in dry pavement; the first time you corner hard on them it's like ice. Look for high performance all seasons, or winter tires (with the snowflake on the sidewall).

Not going to be cornering hard on them, the wife will be driving. I am willing to sacrifice winter autocrossing for a bit more traction in the frozen stuff

The Hankook snow tires that I have for my A4 are really quite good, but then again, my view is probably skewed slightly because it's an AWD car to begin with. I haven't put them on this year (yet), since I'm turning most of my miles in the Speed6, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know what model they are. They're not studded, but they are specific winter tires, with snow siping.

I suggest Michelin X-Ice Xi2. Have worked really well the last two storms.

Oh... And as an aside, I think in '09, they are actually going to release the new 370Z.

Either this tire or the Yokohama W-drive is your best bet for this car.

Go to discount tires and see what they have for it. They can show you a few different tires sets until you find something you like.

Dana, i'm in love with my Bridgestone Blizzaks. They are the MZ-03. They feel like i'm on dry roads when there's ice and snow on the ground.

Re: winter tire recommendations for RWD car

Choose what ever tires you like. Use chains, cables http://www.amazon.com/tag/tire%20snow%20cables or even these things http://www.snobootz.com/ only when you need them, thus saving you the cost of dedicated snow tires. Cables are a snap to take on and off and since they are rarely needed, you don't spend a lot of money on new tires and do a much better job than any snow tire could do on ice or hard snow pack.
