Looking for work, Whats up with CL?

I am looking for work, been looking since March. After hundreds of resumes' I have gotten two interviews. I am getting frustrated with craigslist because 80% of the jobs that say they are local and bullshit "work from home", or jobs in places that are no where near local. On cl admin jobs in denver are actually work at home, make $8000 a week jobs. Screw that.

At this point I will do anything except suck dudes off. I have a bachelors in engineering, and quick to pick up shit. I am a smart individual and a hard worker. Manual labor, admin labor I don't give a shit. I NEED A F'IN JOB. Not afraid to get my hands dirty.

Monster hasn't produced any leads for me, neither has career builder and yahoo jobs is like a large version of craigslist (alot of b.s.). I have started to look at INDEED.com. Is there any denver search engines I am missing?

I am currently in the process of enrollment to get some Microsoft and hopefully Cisco certs. I have worked with PC's and MAC's and am great with a computer (no programming or heavy database stuff yet).

    Any help would be appreciated

Dude, look at all of the engineering companies in Denver. There are a LOT of them and man they pay well. Get yourself a sysadmin job or even a support position.

I've been trying. I spend a minimum of 6 hours a day applying for jobs. Even stop in and personally drop off resumes to the jobs I really feel fit and NO HITS!!!! NONE! My work history is good, great actually I think. No felonies, no drugs, WTF?

I can tell you "what's up". But you won't like the answer.

Re: Looking for work, Whats up with CL?

    couple ideas:

you can search CO State jobs here - might find some luck.

check out www.usajobs.gov for federal job openings, everything from computing to forest service... lots in lakewood, ft collins etc.

theladders.com - more senior type positions and subscription fees apply... not sure of your skill... only reason i suggest it is that it's the one job site where i've actually had luck in the past.

finally, you had your resume critiqued by anyone? might be something to look into, even have someone professionally rewrite it if you're not getting any feedback... between that and tailoring your resume/cover letter to positions you're applying for can go a long ways...

+1 on Dice. If you're looking for computer jobs and not looking on Dice.com, you're missing out on a lot of jobs.

    Good luck.

    Sugar

I feel your pain. I have sent out near 200 resumes this spring and only one interview....good thing Obama's stimulus package is working.

This article doesn't paint a very bright future

Re: Looking for work, Whats up with CL?

Mass blasting of resumes is ineffective at best in this economy. In most cases your information is being funneled through HR and they are getting too many resumes to pay much attention to any particular one over another. Moreover, HR rarely has the authority to make a hire and you are relying on them to forward your resume over hundreds of others to a decision maker.

You were on the right track with stopping by in person and dropping off your resume. I would suggest that you take that a step or two further by creating a list of companies/positions you would like to work for, researching exactly who would be supervising that position (can somebody you already know give you a referral?) then send your resume directly to their attention, follow-up with a phone call and let them know why you would like to work for them, offer to meet for lunch to discuss their needs and how you might fit in to their future plans. I know people who have literally decided to wait in the lobby for somebody to meet with them and they have been hired for upper level spots! All of this works best if you target smaller, locally owned companies rather than corporate giants who have standard practices for chewing gum and toilet paper allocation...

Your only chance is to make yourself stand out. Be professional but be aggressive. Don't limit yourself to responding to ads. Go after the job you want even if its currently full.

    Good luck!

Re: Looking for work, Whats up with CL?

Hand to hand combat is the best way I have found to get a good job. Get out there, dress to the nines, no cologne, comb your damned hair, meet, greet, make eye contact, smile, and be enthusiastic. KNOW what job you are trying to get. KNOW everything you can about the company and the current group you are trying to get into, and make them want you more than they want world peace.

I love interviewing but SEARCHING for a job can be tough. Be positive and treat looking for a job as if it WERE a job.

BadHabit and Devaclis, I think your right. I have responded to ads on CL that were posted in the last hour, then called and said they have over 250 resumes received just in the last hour. It's crazy out there.

Re: Looking for work, Whats up with CL?

It is crazy. Recruiters and HR alike are being flooded with resumes. I posted a Director of IT opening and received hundreds of resumes from every president, CEO, CFO in the Denver area and from out of state.

It's at all levels. And that is why, looking for a job IS your full time job.

Have you gone through the yellow pages and contacted recruiters in your field? Gotta cover all the bases. Exposure is what you need as well as good follow up on your part.
