I felt like I was becoming too dependent on "available light", and not experimenting enough with other avenues of creativity. This was laziness due to my comfort level with natural light shots; I just didn't want to learn something new. So I really had to force myself to acquire studio gear. It's making me learn how to use strobes properly - which is another step in the learning process I'm excited about entering into (after my initial hesitation)!
I am actually shopping for a macro studio setup this days. got a macro lens this Christmas and want to get the light box and some lights. won't take much space....

I nearly got arrested taking this shot. I was only 5-6 minutes on the spot when cops show up just to make sure I wasn't a Russian spy or something like it...

Shot of SunCor Energy company is taken from the highway, using 10 second exposure with gradient colored Cokin filters.

Some fun with headshots in yesterday's snow...

To better control lighting on snowy/cloudy day I implemented:
    - off camera flash
    - reflector

Went up to Longmont last weekend to tell Ricky Orlando good luck on his record breaking laps @ Daytona next weekend. Decided to stop by one of the sugar mills to take some pictures. I didn't get to go in and explore, because I didn't have the proper attire, plus I had Kristin and Gia in the car. So these are all from outside the fence.

Keep your wits about you when exploring that place... cameras all over it, including some infrared jobbers. Considering a copper thief got nailed there 10 days ago, consider yourself lucky for having no run-ins with Johnny Law. That place is on the radar...

"after he reportedly admitted to breaking into the abandoned sugar mill to take copper to recycle for money. Deputies also arrested him on suspicion of theft from a business on Sugar Mill Road.

The business owner reported the theft of a reciprocating saw and welding cables and told deputies he suspected that either a transient or former employee took the items.

Boulder County sheriff’s deputies walked to NAMEREMOVED nearby encampment — which a sheriff’s report describes as a two-room bunker partially dug into the ground north of BLANKED — to talk with him.

According to sheriff’s reports, NAMEREMOVED told the deputies he would go into the sugar mill to take copper wire, then sell it to a recycling business in Longmont. Deputies recovered a receipt from a recycling business showing that he sold 82 pounds of yellow brass and 7 pounds of copper for a total of $175.63."
With the recent incident at Gates, and this numnuts up at the Sugar Mill, a lot of these abandoned properties are being closely monitored.

Just an FYI - and to remember to use your head when urban exploring.

+1 they are after all still private property even though they are abandoned. I make it a point to carry my business card.

I'm no pro, but here are my contributions...

The fog around the Flatirons is looking nice this morning:

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."
