Anyone know much about Android internet connections?

Ok so the problem is. I have a Motorola Droid and a laptop that is hard connected to a network to get to the internet. I want to connect my droid to my laptop so I can get to the internet on my Droid.

Everything I have found connects the laptop to the droid to use the internet through the droid. Being there is no Wifi or 3G connections anywhere around here and I can’t seem to fit the network cable into the little slot on the droid I’m figuring I maybe out of luck.

I thought tethering was to use the phone as a modem/hotspot? He wants it the other way around...

...(I realize there may be a reason you did not explain) but why in hell would you want internet on the phone if you have a PC right there?

Ok I have tried several permeations to get a local WiFi to work. My droid didn't see any of them.

Could the fact that when I setup a Wireless Network that is says it computer to computer mean that a droid phone won't have the software to see it?








I've been reading and it seem the Android phones do not support ad hoc network. Is there another way of setting p a wifi hotspot using a laptop?

I once built a software based AP on linux, it's definitely doable and i think you can find some howto's out there if you happen to have linux..

for windows, a quick look around shows that there are a few but they cost $$$, for instance:

for the price of some of these though you'd be better served just buying a used linksys on ebay and throwing dd-wrt on it or something to handle bridging with a desktop

Randall, I misinterpreted what you were trying to do. I thought for some reason that you were trying to get your laptop on the internet via the Droid, not the other way around.

I've not heard of anyone trying to do what you're doing. What you'd have to do is to is to make sure that first, your wireless card supports acting as an AP, which, I don't think many, if at all, do.

You just need to turn on internet connection sharing in windows... It can be done by going into the properties of the network adapter, then going to the sharing tab. If you are using a version of windows that doesn't have it, then you need 3rd party software.

I've never understood 3rd party tools like this. Windows 7, Vista, and XP SP3 (except starter versions) have the capability to share any internet connection, without any 3rd party software.

It has to do with the lack of support in Android for ad-hoc connections. Essentially, this is a software router to allow connection with multiple devices, just as you would with a hardware router. I've never had to do this (although I have used tethering the other way around), but I thought this might offer an easy solution for Randall.

I tried a copy of Virtual Access Point. It created an ad-hoc connection which my droid can’t see. I looked up to see what can be done to get a droid to see an ad-hoc connection but it required rooting the phone which I don’t want to get into down here.

I’ll keep looking around as I have time. Thanks for the help so far.

Oh man, if it doesn't support ad-hoc connections, then you are out of luck unless you root it. computer to computer, is always ad-hoc.

I wasn't aware you couldn't use ad-hoc with android. I'm actually shocked it isn't Apple that blocks you from doing it, and that android isn't wide open. I think that's the first thing I've seen where Apple is more liberal than the competition. Good to know that connectify can make itself look like a router.
