    Buying a Car Advice

My friend found a car that he wants to buy from a privet seller. The only problem is the guy still owes money on this car so the bank has the title. Since I never bought a car without title I’m not sure what steps you need to take to insure you are not getting screwed. What you recommend?

Dont buy a used car without the title in hand. That's what I'd recommend.

You can basically go to the bank with the guy, hand over your money and the bank takes their share the guy gets what's left, and the bank signs over the title to you. At least that's what I'd do.

Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!

That's the only way I'd do it. Technically, you aren't buying the car from the guy, you're buying it from the bank, better get the bank in on the deal or you will get screwed.

    Great advice!
Will the bank have the title in the branch office?

If they don't they can give you the paperwork to go to the DMV and have them issue you a new title.

No, typically they won't, but they can transfer ownership at their level to you and issue the title to you. Usually they hold it at a corporate office. I just paid off my wife's car and it took almost two months to get the title. Might be different at a smaller bank though.

    Re: Buying a Car Advice

The only sucky part is paying taxes owed on the purchase, you're dealing with a bank and might not be able to ...uh... "negotiate" on the written price of the car.

$1.2k but he didn't have the money. Once the seller figure how much he owes he increased the price by $2k, trying to make a profit

Then find another car, sounds like this one is too good to be true. There's always another car.

All I can say is, Wow.

So did your friend go through with the purchase or have they decided not to deal with this idiot seller?
