102 mph Ticket Dismissed For Man Driving Pregnant Wife to Hospital in New Hampshire

    Published April 05, 2011

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A Londonderry, N.H., man appeared in court yesterday to face charges of excessive speeding to get his pregnant wife to the hospital
John Coughlin was found not guilty of speeding as the judge took into account the frantic 911 call made to report his wife was having a baby and was given a police escort at the end of the harrowing 3am trip last September, MyFoxBoston reports.
His wife Angela had their baby Kyle just minutes after they arrived at the hospital.
When asked if he would speed the next time Coughlin said there won't be a next time as there won't be any more babies after their ordeal.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I mean, of course you WANT to make it to the hospital to have your kid but what is more dangerous, driving at triple digit speeds to make it or delivering the kid in the back seat...

It's true that all humans are born but until the last century or so, all humans experienced birth many times before it was their time to be a mother or father. They had seen it so they knew what to do. Now, it's become a thing behind closed doors and if you're lucky enough to see a video before it's your time, it's still a medical procedure you witness.

    Sad really...

I have a different point of view...if my wife didn't have our kids in the hospital she and the children would have died. She wasn't capable of "pushing" out our children. With our son, she was in labor for 4 hours before the Dr's realized he wasn't ever coming out and an emergency C-Section was performed, w/ my daughter, we knew the case before and and had one scheduled.

So YES in my case I would speed w/o hesitation.

If you're on a highway why not call 911 and get an ambulance? If you're really that unprepared to deal with it, at least have some people trained in the process and possible complications handle it on the way to the hospital.

Some people aren't prepared. And since the baby was born only minutes after arriving I'd say going 100 was necessary... but still dumb.

I do not see it as dangerous, just because the cop clocked him at 102mph could of meant he just speed up on a long empty straight away. Going 100+ is not dangerous if done the right way. Been there many times, and have yet to kill myself or another *shrug*

+1 My wife barely weighed 95 lbs before she got pregnant, and the baby was over 8. Even with an assisted birth (she still managed to do it naturally) she almost bled to death and hand to spend a week in the hospital, and because of the 20 hour labor the baby got sick and had to spend days as well. If she hadn't gone to the hospital, BOTH of them would have died, and I was stuck in Iraq the entire time.

Also, going 102mph in a geo metro is different from going 102mph in a car more suited for higher speeds. Who knows what kind of car this guy was driving.

Ambulance response times aren't always that fast. It seems clear that they did not have enough time to wait even a few minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

I disagree, but not worth getting into it.

I agree...after all the guy was on his way, they would have had to stop and wait for the ambulance, at which point they would have been to the hospital...not to mention them slowly loading her on the cart and into the ambulance, then off they go. Ambulances are not typically FASTER, they are typically safer is all.

Not to mention pay for a silly ambulance ride which they did not need. Who knows maybe they don't have GREAT insurance and that would of been $$$$ they did not have but because its an ambulance and you sign no papers they EXPECT you to pay some over inflated price. I'm against ambulances just for that reason.
