    Horn Upgrade

Obviously a horn can help someone 'see' you in a bad situation, and with how loud truck exhausts are getting, and how well dampened most from the factory cars are now a days (not to mention all the idiots with the $100 wally world subs in a Geo Metro) a loud horn is a good idea.

Now that I'm done preaching to the choir: I want a new/louder horn. Had a PIAA sports horn on my last bike... was never really convinced it was a vast improvement over stock.

I'd like to avoid air... more work and bulk than I'm looking for.

    Options I've found:
    "Wing Blaster" 138db pair From Chrome World $59 + $8 s/h
    http://www.chromeworld.com/ProductDetails/Kits/StaticKitDetails.aspx?KitItemID={6cd8f623-352a-411c-a4ae-fa3d9240751b}&pname=Wing+Blaster+Horns+138+db&Refe rer=QUICK_SEARCH&Alias=horn&ptct=BS-SR&CTitle=&
Hella Supertones (pair) 118db for $52 shipped on Amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Piaa Sports Horn (single) 115db for $45 shipped on Amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/85112-115db-50...6182520&sr=1-1

There are cheapo 130db horns out there... but since it's exposed hanging from the front of a 919, and my life could depend on it working, I'm thinking a better brand might be a worthwhile investment (get what I pay for and all).

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Peter

The Pella looks best suited, the Hella's don't look bad just more space; but yeah nothing beats air.

    Re: Horn Upgrade

Do a quick search and you should find a thread or two about upgrading a horn from a couple years ago. I want to say that the Hella was the popular choice back then. The only downside is finding enough space on the bike for the device

Chris, I tried to find that thread and link to it, but was unable to. Can you take a look & see if you can find it?

I found my e-receipt from Aerostitch rider warehouse - a few of us bought the Ear Cannon Air Horn back then (summer/fall of 08 ). Mine was $45 shipped. Looks like it's gone up $3 since then... Here's a link:

    Re: Horn Upgrade

I searched for 'horn' and couldn't find a thread about them.

The Hella's are big... only thought of them because of how popular they are with the Subaru crowd.

$40 for the Air Cannon... smaller than other air horns I was looking at.
How long can the horn go continuously or in short bursts?

And it's 139db, the loudest of all mentioned thus far.

I can't find it either right now, but I thought there was a group buy on a few of 'em back in '08 or something... I blame my memory on the server crash.

I know Devaclis had a high decibel aftermarket horn on his 600rr that's now Bulldog's and I think a few others bought them as well at the time

    Re: Horn Upgrade

I don't think there was an actual group buy, just a group of people buying the same horn, possibly after hearing one, or it being recommended by someone.

That thread may have been the victim of some housecleaning that was done after the server got brought back up.

I was thinking of upgrading my horn also, Bob; was wondering if you've heard the difference compared to the one you mention/have and the Hella Horn? Which one in you opinion is louder or better?

I have the same horn, but I have yet to install it on the VFR.

Sorry Ramon, I haven't heard it compared to any other aftermarket horns.

    Re: Horn Upgrade

For the Hella horns to be "loud" you have to use both of them. Just one sounds lame and definitely not worth the hassle of installing.

I bought one of those. It was a minature air horn from Aerostitch.

    http://www.aerostich.com/ear-cannon-air-horn.html

It is small and VERY loud.

    Edit.........

I'd like to install one of these on all of my bikes but while it is small, it still requires a bit of room to mount.

Whoops. I see that Bob already had posted this.

    Re: Horn Upgrade

If you're at all familiar with the application, would it fit well on a 919?

My concern is with the mounting location being so exposed, it stands a good chance to get wet, hit by small rocks etc.

    Re: Horn Upgrade

The air horn that I (we) got from Aerostitch should be mounted in a way that shields the air intake from water. Other than that, you just need to use some creativity.

I mounted mine under my custom bike's tail. Bodywork (fiberglass in this case) doesn't hurt sound output too much.

That horn on Chris's bike sure sounds interesting, that's for sure. Like a mini train horn. Pretty cool.

I'm hoping to retain the stock mounting location.

Wasn't the group buy on Stebel horns? IIRC somewhat fuzzily.

I'd do a group buy if it was the right horn/price. The KTM's isn't to bad, but a bike like that needs a louder bark.

    Re: Horn Upgrade

I have the Supertone on my R1, I only put 1 on, just because they are so bulky. I'm sure I could have found a way to mount both, but it would be more work to take them off to use the front stand.
