    Re: 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL-1

And, fwiw, don't get me wrong--I love that there still ARE cars like the Camaro and Mustang, I love RWD V8s, I love the idea of a hooligan car that's terrible at everything yet (probably) stupidly fun to drive.

The only issue, for me, is that once you're in that price range why not get a (new or used) M3 instead? Refined driving, capable at the track, in the canyons, or...doing massive burnouts if you want.

For me, the "perfect" Camaro ZL1 would've been slightly smaller, lighter, and with a more track-focused approach and better handling.

I don't get why American manufacturers keep making the same old shit--the cars of the 1960s were great IN 1968, stop trying to recreate them Now.

Make a fully modern RWD V8 6MT and then let's go have some fun.

Hyundai's coming out with a V8 Genesis Coupe, and that's probably more of what Gm and Ford should make--lightweight (relatively), V8, RWD, Cheap and Fun...

I'd take the maint./repair costs of the Camaro over a Bimmer any day! I've heard nothing but bad things about the 2.0t Genesis Coupe, wondering if this 5.0 is gonna be as bad. IMO when it's that cheap, you get what you pay for.

Domestic manufacturers do what they do best, stuff a honking big motor in a "cheap" platform and call it good. For years the 5.0 Mustang was the best bang for the buck, but don't expect refinement. Even in the Z06, I see switchgear and vents that you can get off a Solstice or Malibu.

Real GTs are the domain of cars like the Skyline, M series Bimmers, Audi's S cars, etc.

The ZL-1 just did it in 7:41.27

But, if it didn't smell of Old Spice and Golf Bags, I'd consider a CTS-V--when I'm 50...

True, but when it's $25k versus $60k, that's a lot of savings--and Hyundai's got the 10yr warranty, so unless you're modding it out of warranty, it's all free...

The thing is, the domestics have European counterparts that area (typically) better than what they sell us here--and that's annoying.

I actually love how the CTS-V Sedan looks, but the interior doesn't hold up and for the $$, I still think a BMW or Audi would be the better buy.

Still, maybe a CPO CTS-V would be a fun Daily...there's a guy out here with a murdered-out one running 4-port Borlas, sounds pretty damn mean.

Having owned a GM small block v8 sedan, I can never imagine going back to a 6cyl or turbo4 again, regardless of gas prices. The sound alone is worth every penny. I like WRX's, but the sound they put out makes me think they are running on 3 cylinders.

You can get equal-length headers for the boxer, but then they'll sound worse--like a farting Honda.
As it is, I like the loping rumble of the unequal-length headers on a WRX/STI, and it's a distinctive sound I can pick out of a crowd, even at a track day.

BUT, you're correct--the old rumble of my LT-1 was far, far superior all across the rev range...it's a sound I really do miss.

And, more than just the sound, I miss the landslide of torque at low revs.

As to MPG, on the highway in 6th I was loping at just over over idle, and could get 30mpg at ~70mph...my STI gets...um...less...much less than my old V8 did...unless I was beating it at the track, then they both get about 13mpg...

    Fine. I'm sold--someone buy me a CTS-V or ZL-1 for Xmas.

^^^^This too. I love how turbos come on with a wave of torque, but even better is when you accidentally blip the throttle on a big V8 from idle and the tires break loose before you even have a chance to pull your coffee away from your mouth.

    Instant Gratification.

    ...and coffee burns.

Yep. My Camaro had this beautiful little side-step she'd do when she'd launch, just kind of wiggle her hips before the weight transfer would plant the rear tires and she'd settle in and straighten out.

But, even at a full stop you could just blip the throttle and the whole car would twitch, it was pretty damn cool--and something my EJ 25 just can't pull off.

    ...I miss that car...

Wow thought some people from a motorcycle forum would have gotten the power to weight thing figured out.

Power-to-Weight has little to nothing to do with Shits-And-Giggles.

Shits and giggles come from paying less for something that goes faster.

The same reason most people choose to by a r1, cbr1000, ect over say a ducati or a aprilia.

    Is bang for buck.

Whole conversation makes me think of this:

    '05 Pitster Pro 125 - Pitbike madness

I agree on the Bang 4 buck does not necessarily outweigh shits & giggles.

If I had that kind of money I would have a lightweight, track-day car like a WRX, Lotus, Ariel Atom, etc. and I would have a neck-snapping, tire-devastating muscle car (old or new).

Example, I had my RC-51 for street use: Shits & Giggles
    and I had my '99 R6 for track-days: Bang 4 buck

Whatever makes your wallet lighter and your smile brighter!

So straight up you have more fun on the street with the RC or on the track with the R6?
