    Question Helmet wind noise?

Although the 2012 Helmet Thread recommends Shoei helmets as being quiet and my 1.5-yr-old RX-1100 started off great, I'm now noticing quite a bit of wind noise. I just changed out the cheek pads thinking that perhaps their compression over time was contributing, but that has not improved anything. Oddly, I find that pushing down on the top of the helmet brings quiet.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I thought a Shoei should last longer, but is it just time for a new helmet?

I'd say the lighter the helmet, the more wind noise you are going to get. I really noticed this when I went from a Shoei to a Suomy. If you are able to push the helmet down some, could you possibly tighten the strap down a bit more? If not, your interior helmet pad has probably packed out a bit causing more wind noise to circulate through it.

Wow, must be some crazy wind noise or crappy earplugs then

Only thing I could think of is that helmet was too big in the first place then. Helmets do wear out so you should replace them every few years. Been some topics on it here on the board.

Thanks for the input. Actually, I learned today that a fall of the helmet off the bike handlebars most likely separated the shell from the underlying material enough to allow air to circulate in that space at speed, and pushing down on the top temporarily closed that gap.

    Aaaaand, new helmet ordered.

People usually can't interchange arai with shoei IMO. They just don't fit the same.

I don't know what the weight of the helmet would have anything to do with the wind noise. I like the chin spoiler on my Arai that deploys and directs air around my neck.
