    Southwest Colorado Trip Report

Here's a photo report of a ride that my sweetie and I did a couple of weeks ago. We met up in Durango with friends old and new, 24 riders in all from various states, and spent the weekend doing the Million Dollar Highway and other roads around the area.

Central and southwestern Colorado offers some of the best riding in the state, for those of you willing to venture farther than the front range.

Open roads, sparse traffic, and well.. I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

The first glimpse of the 14ers.

    West of South Fork

    Top of Wolf Creek Pass

    Near Red Mountain Pass

Oh shit .. cops!! Actually one of our friends from Cali on an ex-CHP RT1100-P

US550, between Red Mtn Pass and Ouray. aka "the gorge of eternal peril"

    Box canyon above Ouray

I think everyone who's been there has this pic.

    Ouray

    Cont'd ..

    Somewhere between Ridgway and Sawpit

    Lizard Head Pass

A local told us about the "W" Cafe in Gunnison. Their open face sammiches were just right to hit the spot after the trip from Montrose. I had forgotten how much fun US50 was, between Montrose and the Blue Mesa Reservoir; high speed sweepers and roller coaster elevation changes.

The only weather we hit was a bit of rain on the ride back Monday. Some over Monarch and a bit more near Conifer.

A great way to spend a weekend and see the state. Total door to door mileage was just under 1000.

Looks like an excellent ride. I'm about to get going on some long day rides after spending the winter months thumbing through Steve's book.

Hard to choose what bike to ride. Street bike for the twisties, or dual sports for all the dirt roads. We keep saying we ought to trailer the 250 D/S bikes next year and bag some passes between Silverton and Lake City.

Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

We were going to take a more twisty way out, but took the most direct way after a short delay because one of our party got a leaking rear tire soon after leaving MoCo.

LOTS of good dirt riding, esp for that size of bike. You can set up base in Ouray or Silverton and side tons of trails.

I need to do more long-run rides, going to the 4-corners area in 2001 was a blast, used to do 750-1k rides all the time, now it's all just MoCo loops and back, definitely envious.

I will mention to the kid who bought the blue bike just in case he's decided he's no longer interested in them.

I did a quick tour on Northern Colorado last Saturday myself.
    C. Springs to Lyons to meet the group
Lyons to Hwy 14 the back way
    Hwy 14 to Granby
Granby to Wolcott via Gore Pass
    Battle Mountain and Tennesse Pass
    Leadville to Buena Vista
    and back home
600 miles, great time, sore butt.

Nice work there Jefe, I've been on most of those roads once with a (sadly now deceased) friend. Looking forward to doing them again, perhaps this summer.
