Labor-Day Weekend Ride/Camping Trip to Durango

I'm thinking about riding down to Durango on Saturday via the Million Dollar Highway, and attending the ABATE campout.

I haven't looked at routes yet, but Sunday would include a ride around the southwest region of CO (and/or possibly one or more of AZ, NM & UT), back for dinner, then back to Denver via the Million Dollar Highway again on Monday.

Terry (ABATEStateCoord) has offered to haul camping gear down & back for anybody who is unable to transport it on their bike.

Post up if you're interested. Should be a good time.

Here's the form to register for the campout: http://abateofcolo.org/images/storie...istration_.pdf

Very much interested in going. Would it be for 2 days (sat and Sun) or 3 days (Sat through Mon)?

In years past, camping/hotels were at a premium (i.e. not available at all) during Ignacio Bike Week, IIRC...just a heads up

Expect area roads to be clogged with Harleys. Of course, north of Ignacio on the Million Dollar Hwy... no so much.

Would there be an impact on Durango itself (i.e. hotels)?
How about an overnighter in Ouray instead?

You have no idea. Last time, I spent about two hours searching for a hotel that is just right in Durango, just to connect with Nick Ninja and then re-book to the hotel that he and the rest of the gang was staying at. LOL.
Maybe I should take your advice!

Actually, I do have an idea. Durango and all of the camp sites were booked solid. Me, Dave and Chris (Aracheon) slept on a random pulloff near the top of a pass. Man, that was chilly! Map Link

Re: Labor-Day Weekend Ride/Camping Trip to Durango

Our campground is the Wild Horse Equestrian Center. This property is owned by one of our members so it will only be ABATE people and folks we know. That includes CSC members...not open to the public. It's just a little outside of Ignacio and it's not clogged with Harleys....it's a great spot. It is rough camping so there is no electric for rvs. They have an indoor arena where the bands will play and a whole kitchen setup for outdoor cooking including picnic tables to sit and eat.

Make sure you eat over at The Lost Dog, more filled with locals there. Awesome food, was just there on Friday for a meeting.

I shouldn't have been so quick in my reply. I am unable to go that weekend. Have fun, be safe, and take pics.

I might see you. Mrs. Clovis and I are riding to Cortez on Friday and checking out Mesa Verde on Saturday until the afternoon, then heading to Telluride and back down through Durango on the MDHWY

Looks like I'll be able to get my bike back together to make this trip (assuming the remaining parts arrive by Friday).

I'm thinking about doing the tourist thing and going to 4-corners and Cortez on Sunday.

Be sure to hit Mesa Verde Forrest and see the ancient ruins, the pass is fun as hell on the bike, and the ruins are very cool to see! Have a good trip .

Oh FYI the pass is a toll to get to the ruins.
