I can tell you, living in vegas for 5 years it is already very common there with the close proximity to california/californians, they already assume it's ok. I was guilty of it myself many times. Even passed a few cops on I-215 in rush hour traffic and they couldn't care less. Sitting in rush hour in 100+ degrees on the hot pavement wearing gear....you would too! At some point you just say fuck this to yourself and start going!

Good to know, I thought about doing it a couple days ago and was wondering if it was legal here or not although
Thing about lane splitting is that it's the gray line where motorcycles can still blame cars for not seeing them. You have all the right in the world to be pissed when a car turns left right in front of you, or goes into an intersection right before you drive through it. But when you're cutting in between lanes often in peoples blind spots, the responsibility is all on you. Lane sharing is risky, and it's a risk you should weigh the pros and cons before doing. Great to have the option without a ticket, but you won't get much sympathy from me when somebody veers into you when they don't see you

My buddy from Loveland who is out there now talked to me about this the other day. I did it a few times when I lived in CA. Never was really comfortable with it, but then I lived where you didn't need to do it, so we'd do it only when we rode to LA or something. I'd say keep you top speed to no more than 10mph over traffic, and 20mph TOPS. Be vigilant, do your best to make sure others see/hear you, and you should be ok. Making it legal will give cops ammunition to go after assholes who open doors at you or swerve at you, so that's a plus.

I think if legal, cagers would get used to it and not retaliate....maybe even get more motorcycles on the road.

What a lot of cagers don't realize, is that letting bikes lane split in heavy rush hour situations actually helps the flow of traffic in general. They don't have 1 little bike taking up 30-40 feet of roadway (assume over all space in between car in front and car behind) They seem to think we're "cheating". Morons, it helps them too. That's a main reason it's allowable in CA with their nightmare traffic issues

I think we should start with a law legalizing Filtering, when traffic is stopped motorbikes can go between to get to the front of traffic.
Then go to full legalization of lane sharing.
That seems like a better gradient for the cagers.

I'm against "filtering" for one "personal" reason: What happens if you take off, the bike stalls, and you fall right in front of the car as it leaves the line? I've done it, but I think it's more dangerous than safely splitting lanes. I would vote for it though, and let the rider decide.
