How one more layer can keep you cooler

As the heat is here to stay at least through the weekend, I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that: Wearing a base layer can keep you cooler! Counter intuitive, I know, but it's true. A good technical base layer of merino wool or other high performance fabric (not cotton) helps pull the sweat off your skin, keeping you cooler, dryer and overall more comfortable

How it applies in physical activities

And how it can keep you warm and cool when riding

I wear UnderArmor or similar wicking tees in summer, and it keeps me cool. Bamboo?? Hmm.. interesting.

Merino can handle things like this pretty well actually, doesn't even get funky. Besides it's 4 days straight or packing a whole lot more gear on the bike

agree I always keep a light layer on underneath, normally some kind of heat gear such as underarmor.

I rode in GA and AL last July and hear me now, believe me later, you don't want to do that! I wore short-sleeve UA Heat Gear undershirt, mesh jacket, canvas riding pants with padded lycra shorts. Stop and go city traffic was pretty much unbearable (resulting in heat exhaustion on my first day), not a lot better at speed either. Lots of stops, staying hydrated and wetting down my undershirt repeatedly was how I survived.

I would actuall get a chill wearing my UA under the perf leathers once I hit the backstraight after sweating my butt off in pregrid

I just dump ice water into leather and my lid. Works great.

That's because with high humidity in the south, you don't get nearly the evaporative cooling capacity as you do here.

That and the NT700 I was riding did too good a job keeping the breeze off me. I had to stand up to get cooler air thru my jacket. With the exception of the flood I rode thru east of Asheville, a naked bike would have been better.
