Can you give me some examples of what you think of as officers not enforcing the laws as they are written?

    Easy enough:

Officer doesn't pull person over in the left lane holding up traffic. I see this almost every day. If it's isn't someone completely oblivious, making a mexican roadblock, it's a semi next to another semi next to another semi. Cops don't seem to care, even though it's a law and they should enforce it.

Officer on 9news story pulls over girl and, on camera, says to the girl "It's illegal to manipulate an electronic device while driving", when in fact it's illegal to manipulate a WIRELESS TELEPHONE while driving. He did this because he tried to enforce the law as HE saw fit, not how it's written.

Officer witnesses someone speeding at 59mph in a 55mph zone, and does not pull that person over.

Officer witnesses someone speeding at 59mph in a 55mph zone, pulls that person over, then based on their "discretion", lets that person go with a verbal warning.

Officer pulls over another off-duty officer that is completely wasted, and gives that officer a ride home. He never reports that the officer was DUI.

All of these examples are officers using their "discretion" to enforce the law how they want to individually enforce it. Not how it's exactly written. Don't get me wrong, it's great that an officer has that discretion to not give a ticket for 4mph over, but is it right that an officer can then go out and tell some high school minor that it's "illegal to manipulate an electronic device" because it's his way of attempting to curb distracted driving? The fact is, it's not illegal to manipulate a regular old handheld MP3 player. Officers are arguing that any device with Wifi, can be considered a wireless telephone because the law says "without limitation". Even though we all know that a phone call made on a wifi device while in a moving car, is only going to last a few seconds before you lose the signal.

This is without me getting into officers who consistently break the law while on duty, and while NOT responding to any sort of call. Apophasis, no?

    Re: passing on the right

Here in England you can only pass on the right side and is illegal to pass on the left side (drive on the left hand side) Every car basically gets out of the way of a motorcyclist.
