no. but i have ridden the Meth Hwy. I-70 to Commerce City.
A lot of us have. Grim did it a few weeks ago and I'm doing it Sept 10th and 11th (see Durango 2011 post under trips and touring)
It's a surpurb road.
Have to get out there someday, seen couple documentaries on it and looks fantastic

how long does it take to get out there
think im going to ride out fri and come back through new mexico sat
From where? It's a typically a 2 day trip from Colorado Springs.
It's Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton (lower left hand section). This map is about 900 miles.
im going to head out hwy50 to 550 and go south and either cut back 160 or drop down into new mexico and cut across never been through new mexico figure it could be cool dont really make good plans cause i never go by them
really how i get back depends on how close the bar is to where i stop fri night
One more vote for what a great ride it is , however I would advise forgetting the New Mexico return route. I did that myself once coming back from Cortez and it was so boring I cut back up to Colorado the first chance I got
Yeah, New Mexico is pretty for the flat top mountains but the roads are straight and boring. A few years ago we did Hwy 666... there were a few sections where we ran 130+ MPH for over half an hour straight.

This route through New Mexico via Chama (drop south on US84 just east of Pagosa Springs and then back up to Antonito on Hwy17) is NOT tedious! Sure, you're only in NM for a tiny bit, but the roads to-and-from were worth it. Ninja2 and I did this last year as part of our 3-day ride.
Though it may not be super curvy in the actual NM portion, you do get rewarded with winding road and rolling green hills in the first half of this route, and fun twisties among buttes in the latter half as you follow the Conejos River.
As for US550, I've ridden the Million Dollar Hwy twice, each time having gone a different direction (I've decided I prefer northbound). As a must-do on the riding list, it has some decent pull-offs with great views.
Durango is about 5 to 6 hours from da Springs in a car.

I like mountains because they make me feel small.
I'll be riding 550 on Sunday.
Pics!
On the way to and from Chama, NM in mid-September 2010. Me and Ninja2.
Back at the border...
And back on topic, US 550 (Million Dollar Hwy) two weeks ago with Mntntoproc (our own mini-version of Ducatis in the Rockies):
Just south of Ouray
Red Mountain overlook:
Nearing Durango...

What? You went without me?
EDIT - Just recalled that you had told me about it - sorry -last two weeks were a big blur.
This year - Shiva, baby. Do I have to say more?

nice pics from your past ride!
You ARE getting old. That's ok, I am too. Anyway, we need to get some southwest Colorado miles on that Shiveeeeh.
Thank you! These roadtrips have been a blast, and I can't go without documenting them. Hopefully the pics will help others plan their own such trips.
